Dementieva too strong for Brit

Anne Keothavong was no match for Elena Dementieva in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

The duo were playing for the first time since Wimbledon - when Dementieva bowed out in the semi-finals to tournament winner Serena Williams while Keothavong exited in the first round in straight sets to Austrian Patricia Mayr.

Third seed Dementieva eased to a 6-1 6-4 success tonight in a repeat of last year's US Open third round match.

Elsewhere at Stanford, Romania's Monica Niculescu overpowered America's Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1 6-0, Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-1, while Hungary's Melinda Czink saw off Alisa Kleybanova, of Russia, 6-0 7-5.
